I tiptoe through the forest of brush and cold mountain
The quiet whistle of the wind luring me out of my den
I blend, orange furred, with the bright warm hues of the autumn leaves
That fall to the ground in millions, a flurry from the trees
The shrubs, trees and saplings grow unchecked through these lands
A playground for us, to run through bushes and trees grand
But we must hide, we must be careful here nowadays
For each corner turns your kind, or the effects you’ve left behind
The lichen and moss that carpets this forest ground
Is trampled by the young animals who snip by without sound
A blur of orange, yellows, browns and reds
Split by the dark branches of the trees above head
They tower, spindle like and skeletal, a sight to behold
Overrun with careful leaves of colors unknown
And the seasons will change, bringing new leaves of bright viridian shades
For the forest is ever-changing, a painting of vivid colors and tints that fade
The elms and the linden and the sweet gum trees
They sway with the wind under mountain breeze
The hickory and oak, the maple and chestnut
Drop fall leaves to the ground beside the shrubs and buds
But the animals who live in this ever-changing woodland
Are afraid of the change that might never end
The trees hide the animals that I hunt and prey for
Quiet, soft haired rabbits and voles
That hide within the shrubbery, away from my steps
The robins’ chirp in the echoing cavernous depths
The bluebells and mushrooms that vipers and salamanders live by
Hiding the mice and squirrels that run under dreary skies
That the harpy eagles dive for, searching these cold woods
Their eyes trained on the deer, the moose that clip through
For the changing winds and the raging monsoon, they knock down our home
Fallen trees that block our paths, a labyrinth unknown
The rich fertile soil grown under heavy rains and hurricane
Supports woodland elsewhere unfound other than these mountains
A diverse timbered, bark-ridden land,
Subject to endless destruction, felled and unable to stand
Just for your buildings, just for your concrete
I must wait in the bare shadows of skeleton trees
And as the woodland retreats, we must hide away
For where will go? Without our colorful forest to stay?
The ancient trees that have been home for years
You have ruined them so easily, you have left us in tears.
