icarus

icarus

you are a golden child among the rays of the sun

you float on your sea salt breeze in azure sky

your wings beat with the grace of an angel

you stray not far from god’s abode itself

and high up in the clouds of your escape

tell me, what is freedom?

far from your tower of stone imprisonment

your days of inferiority and bare survival

you are above the control of the world that shut you out

you soar from the rules broken like the waves beneath you

you are a bird, you are a man, you are beyond this world

you are limitless

one with the heavens, mercy to none but nature

drafted upwards by the pull of your shackle-free existence

icarus, do you forever wish to be higher?

do you wish to be one with the endless expanse around you?

do you wish to be drunken on the lull of a soft clouded world?

tell me, icarus

will you ever come down?

your burnt-candle wings which you so easily adorned

you must keep them strapped tight to your bare bruised back

if you are to fly so close to the sun

you must prevent the streaming tears of waxen sculpture

from bringing you to the drowning whirlpool below

a prison once again

you are a golden child of god-like man-made interference

you are unstoppable and free

above the sea and in the clouds

you are flying too close to the sun

so tell me, icarus

what does it mean to be free?

is your dance on the brink of heaven one of joy?

is the warmth of your sun-heated soul burning with desire?

is it worth the fall?

your tumble from the world above

lands you in a fate much worse than before

you are nothing but a man once again

succumb to rolling tides and choking darkness

your freedom has been your downfall, icarus

you have been felled by your momentary happiness

giddy on the power and respite you will never have

you have flown too close to the sun

and you will never fly again.
