I slither down the hot sand under the scorching sun
The dunes are rippling hills of golden mass, a sea of one
Down across the flat land of the desert domain
Where the land is a vast expanse of lonely plains
And the sun burns something fierce across rainless years
The ground a cracked floor, from the bright sun’s wear
My brothers and I, we search for refuge
For hope, amongst the yellow, we search for water blue
An oasis we hope to see, a sliver of blue and green
But we revel in the desert’s sunset, for it has colors unseen
The pink and orange scream across the golden dunes
Across cloudless skies broken by the cacti who loom
The ripples across the sands like rippling ponds
I can hear them rustle, rustle softly with the tumbleweed fronds
So, I wait for the set of the sun over the dunes of gold
Each night it is hotter, each day, the heat more bold
For days, we bear the dry winds, whipping and loud
They are bleak and ripping, like the times that ravage these grounds
We burrow under the sand, escaping the burn, the humans that roam
They dig further than us, in search of their black gold
Pulling apart our burrows and holes
For their trades, their pipes, their oil and roads
With each land you pull apart, each tree you run down
More animals I do not know are left with habitats unfound
Their lands resembling the golden emptiness of mine
Unrelenting desert land it has become, set to wither over time
The desert land, so unharmed, untouched it seemed
Over which we crawled and skittered, over sands that gleamed
The black scaled Gila monster, venomous and vain
Running from the bobcat, searching for prey.
Under the eyes of the roadrunner, and the small feathered birds
Who cry over the setting sun, sky streaked with orange and blood
For in the sky they see what is to come
A future where deserts are overrun
The plain yellow harking over rainforests alike
Dry and desolate, the sun sweltering and bright
And those who live on the desert’s bounty
Must weep, they will fall as they pull away everything
Our throats are parched, and our world follows suit
Such a bleak world is the desert, but it is getting worse soon
The endless sky over the lands, they only get more dry
We are looking for our oasis, for help we cry
We only find mirages, falsehood amidst the burning sky
We try to hope, but can we be helped?
Will you stay away from our reserves, and not run down our wells?
Will you let the desert stay barren and rare?
Instead of turning the rest of the world into the same stare of despair?
